Many of these seem bizarre to the modern mind but make fascinating reading. John Bunyan (1628-1688) es uno de los principales representantes del puritanismo literario inglés. El servicio militar le puso en contacto con el ala radical del ejército de Cromwell, donde conocería las virtudes piadosas y combativas del Ejército del Nuevo Modelo. Su confianza absoluta en la palabra de Dios le llevaría a enfrentarse a cuáqueros y baptistas, y a ser encarcelado por mantener un servicio que no estaba en conformidad con el culto nacional de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. Aleksandr Soljenitsin (1918-2008) va néixer a la regió russa del Caucas septentrional. Inicialment va estudiar ciències a Rostov, però va acabar dedicant la seva vida a la literatura i a reconquerir una memòria històrica que el partit estatal havia confiscat. El 1942, Soljenitsin s’allista voluntari per anar al front, on serà condecorat. El 1945, però, és condemnat a vuit anys d’internament en camps de treball, per haver criticat Stalin. Després viu tres anys desterrat al Kazakhstan. El 1954 és tractat d’un càncer.
El 1958, un cop recuperades la salut i la llibertat, viatja per Rússia a peu i amb bicicleta. D’aquests viatges, en neixen les Miniatures: breus proses poètiques que, partint d’un paisatge, un objecte o un animal, dibuixen la seva ànima i la del seu país amb emoció i vivesa.
El 1963 aconsegueix publicar Un dia d’Ivan Deníssovitx, però aviat ha de tornar a la clandestinitat. El 1970 rep el premi Nobel de literatura i prefereix no viatjar a Estocolm per evitar represàlies polítiques del règim soviètic i per continuar la redacció del monumental projecte Arxipèlag Gulag.
El 1974 es veu obligat a exiliar-se als Estats Units. No torna al seu país fins el 1994. En tornar fa un nou viatge per Rússia i escriu una segona sèrie de Miniatures (1996-99).
